Sugar Loaf Mound bought by Osage Nation

St. Louis, MO. – A Native American group has bought property that contains St. Louis' last remaining mound.

The Osage Nation now owns land with the Sugar Loaf Mound near Broadway and I-55.

An elderly couple who owned a home next to the mound for nearly 50 years recently put it up for sale.

Congressman Russ Carnahan created a task force that included the Osage Nation in an effort to preserve it.

"We were known as Mound City because of those mounds, and it's a part of our very early history," Carnahan said. "This is very likely one of the earliest man-made structures in our area."

Archeologist John Kelly of Washington University was included in Carnahan's task force. He says discussed Sugar Loaf Mound and mounds that once dotted St. Louis with KWMU's Maria Altman.
