Survey: Most St. Charles County residents favor smoking ban

By Bill Raack, St. Louis Public Radio

ST. LOUIS –

A new survey by the American Cancer Society finds that most St. Charles County voters favor a strong smoking ban.

St. Charles County does not have a public smoking ban currently and efforts to put one in place have stalled among elected officials.

Stacy Reliford with the American Cancer Society in St. Louis said that nearly 70 percent of the 400 registered voters surveyed support making bars, restaurants, casinos and other workplaces completely smoke-free.

"We're just hoping to educate the community and our elected leaders out there on the issue and get them to understand that this is something their constituents want," Reliford said. "They want protection from second hand smoke."

St. Louis County and the city of St. Louis have partial smoking bans going into effect in January. Lake St. Louis in St. Charles County will have a municipal public smoking ban on October 1st.
