IL Sec. of State Workers Could Still Strike

By Sean Crawford, IL Public Radio

Springfield, Ill. – A strike that that would shut down drivers' license facilities in Illinois is still possible.

The union SEIU is trying to negotiate a new contract with the Secretary of State's office.

SEIU's Al Piper says a tentative deal reached last month was scuttled when the state suggested layoffs would be possible. But Piper says he hopes to avoid a walk-out. "We're not going into negotiations saying 'we want a strike.' We're going into negotiations saying 'we want an agreement.'"

Talks are planned for the rest of this week.

About 2,400 Secretary of State workers are in the union.

Their main concern has been salary, which they say is below what other state workers earn.
