St. Louis Public Radio would like to help you get into the Holiday spirit with these great Holiday Specials: 

  An Afro Blue Christmas, Monday, 12/21/2015, from 7 to 8 p.m.    (*** preempts Q ***) Join us for a special holiday concert with Howard University's premiere vocal ensemble, Afro Blue, and special guest pianist Cyrus Chestnut. The acapella group performs a variety of holiday songs including African-American spirituals, jazz and pop tunes, and classical repertoire. The joyous celebration includes one of a kind arrangements of traditional holiday songs as well as new compositions. This music is perfect for the holidays and the spirit of Christmas. Hosted by Michele Norris.

Festivo Alt.Latino With Gaby Moreno & Friends, Tuesday, 12/22/2015, from 7 to 8 p.m.  (*** preempts Q ***) Alt.Latino continues its homegrown tradition of celebrating the holidays in song with a special show featuring songwriter/performer Gaby Moreno. Vocalist Moreno brings a Muscle Shoals-tinged holiday celebration to this year's Festivo Alt. Latino. Classics from the U.S. and Latin America get a shimmering bluesy, R&B treatment from Moreno and her four-piece band in a performance recorded live in front of a studio audience. There is plenty of joy and holiday spirit in both English and Spanish that will add a new dimension to the idea of holiday music. 

All Songs Considered for the Holidays, Wednesday, 12/23/2015, from 7 to 8 p.m.  (*** preempts Q ***)  NPR Music hosts Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton wanted to do something really special for the holidays. So they rented a small cabin in the woods and invited some of their closest friends for what promised to be the party of the century.

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, Thursday, 12/24/2015, from 9 to 11 a.m., and rebroadcast Thursday, 12/24/2015 from 7 to 9 p.m.   Hosted by Michael Barone, this is a live broadcast from the historic chapel of King's College in Cambridge, England. The 30-voice King's College Choir performs the legendary Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service including readings and music.

Jonathan Winters' A Christmas Carol, Friday, 12/25/2015, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and rebroadcast Friday, 12/25/2015 from 10 to 11 p.m.  (*** preempts St. Louis on the Air – both broadcast times***)  An updated version of a public radio tradition hosted by NPR's Susan Stamberg. Master comedian Jonathan Winters presents a distinctive reading of Dickens' holiday classic, with a special performance edition prepared by Dickens for his own presentations. Also featuring Mimi Kennedy. 

A Season’s Griot 2015, Monday, 12/28/2015, from 7 to 8 pm  (*** preempts Q ***) This will be an hour-long Kwanzaa celebration in story and song, hosted by Madafo Lloyd Wilson. This year's program captures the tales and traditions of African American and African peoples, and will celebrate The National Association of Black Storytellers with special guests Mother Mary Carter Smith, Linda Goss, Dr. Hugh Morgan Hill, better known as Brother Blue, the show's poet laureate, Beverly Burnette, and other members of the Season's Griot family. Familiar and favorite elements of Griot will also be in place with plenty of music.

The Capitol Steps: "Politics Takes a Holiday," Thursday, 12/31/2015, from 6 to 7 p.m. (*** preempts Marketplace and ½ hour of ATC ***) It's the Capitol Steps annual year in review special, "Politics Takes a Holiday - New Year’s Special." 

New Year’s Eve Celebration with the St. Louis Symphony, Thursday, 12/31/2015 from 7 to 10 p.m. (approx. end time)  (*** preempts Q, On Point, and Fresh Air ***) Join David Robertson and the St. Louis Symphony for the Tenth Annual New Year’s Eve Celebration! End the year on a high note with an evening full of magical music and festive surprises! Don’t miss this widely popular and most entertaining celebration of the New Year.

The holiday music schedule on our classical music service – Classical 90.7 KWMU:

December 21-22, 2015: Two to three holiday music selections per hour

December 23, 2015: All Christmas music, beginning at midnight.

December 24 & 25, 2015: All Christmas music.

Also, on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, we will program music appropriate for ringing in the New Year, including lots of Strauss Waltzes on January 1st.
