Starting Saturday, a portion of Interstate 255 will be shut down in both directions for five months, kicking off a 10-month project to renovate what the state considers one of its worst roads.

The Illinois Department of Transportation’s first phase of repairs to a crumbling section of I-255, one of many projects under the Rebuild Illinois capital plan, begins by closing down all lanes of a roughly 4-mile stretch between I-55/70 at Exit 25 in Collinsville and Exit 20 at I-64 west of Fairview Heights.

An IDOT spokesperson told St. Louis Public Radio the department expects the section of Interstate 255 between Collinsville Road and Interstate 64 will close on Feb. 1, 2020 and will re-open in June. The second section, from I-64 to Illinois Route 15, will close in June. IDOT expects the entire roadway will be open by Thanksgiving.

Original story from Oct. 22:

BELLEVILLE — The Illinois Department of Transportation will completely close a seven-mile stretch of Interstate 255 early next year.

The major rehabilitation project spans Illinois Route 15 to Collinsville Road and includes resurfacing, significant bridge repairs and other safety improvements.

A new section of Illinois Route 255 near Godfrey is now open to motorists.

The freeway has been extended from Seminary Road to Humbert Road. Work on that section of Route 255 had been delayed because of problems with an embankment that caused the pavement to crack.

The last part of Route 255, from Humbert to Illinois Route 111, is expected to be completed in November. When it’s finished, Route 255 will run from I-270 at Edwardsville to U-S Route 67 in Godfrey.

Transportation officials are making changes to Interstate 270 and Interstate 255’s controversial variable speed limits.

MoDOT says a new study finds that they have helped traffic flow slightly since they were instituted in 2008, and accidents are down on the busy highway. So MoDOT engineer Tom Blair says they’ll make the variable speed limits simply "advisory" by this summer.
