ISBE Asks Families To Report Seclusion, Restraint

Nov 25, 2019

The Illinois State Board of Education is encouraging anyone with information about abusive time-out rooms or restraints in any school setting to share that information directly with the agency. The request comes in the wake of a report earlier this week by the Chicago Tribune and ProPublica documenting thousands of instances of children, usually with special needs, placed in seclusion in their schools.

Kevin Rubenstein, president of a statewide group of special education administrators, told the board to expect to hear even more stories.

The Illinois State Board of Education announced on Wednesday that it will take emergency action to end isolated seclusion of children in schools, saying the practice has been “misused and overused to a shocking extent.”

Calling the seclusion of children in Illinois “appalling,” Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said that he directed the education agency to make the emergency rules, and that he will then work with legislators to make them law.

Review: Conceptual Art in a Conceptual Art Space

Jan 21, 2013

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Jan. 21, 2013 - Bringing to mind Churchill’s description of the Russian national interest in 1939 as “ a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma” (did you know where that was from?), Christopher Chiappa’s 54-minute video Hermit Crab viewed from within the 7’ x 7’ x 9’ Isolation Room/Gallery Kit is a complex experience that raises intriguing questions about the nature of art participation.

'Jimma' celebrates Carter

Mar 23, 2011

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, March 23, 2011 - Isolation Room's new exhibit is "Jimma!" by Los Angeles-based artist Jay Lizo: a fabulous portrait of Jimmy Carter back in the '70s glam era, delivering a speech amid trippy colored light beams and a silver sky.

The work is from "A Song from My Hero Collection," a series of portraits of people Lizo admires, and it's nice to see Carter thus celebrated -- not for his latter-day diplomatic and humanitarian efforts, but for the workmanlike dedication with which he handled his single, unfairly maligned presidential term.

Review: Irazu layers form in Isolation

Feb 14, 2011

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Feb. 14, 2011 - The work on view at Isolation Room, Spanish artist Pello Irazu, is an absolute modernist gem.

"Belgrado XIII" layers tape and paint onto a photograph of sculptural arrangements in Irazu's studio. The photo looks down upon boxlike structures stacked on a chair. Over the surface of this tight, dizzying view, Irazu has added sculptural approximations in two dimensions: painted woodgrain that mimics cut lumber, and red tape highlights with faux shadows that look like painted plywood.

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Jan. 31, 2011 - Isolation Room is presenting "Fireworks," a video by the British collaborators Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson, a work perfectly suited for the venue's tight quarters.
